What is a driveshaft:

Simply speaking it is a rod that revolves such that it can take power from the engine and deliver it to the wheels of your car. If the driveshaft is broken then the engine cannot turn the wheels! The shaft is a hollow tube of metal, as the outer part of the rod has the usable strength in this application - and having the shaft hollow reduces weight and expense. A draw back is that the drive shaft becomes vulnerable to external knocks – like hitting a rock if driving off road or on a bumpy track. The shaft itself could be bent or cracked; or else the transmission or differential could be damaged by absorbing the shock transmitted along the shaft.

If you hear a noise coming from the drive shaft area then that could mean that a bearings needs to be cleaned and lubricated. It is important to regularly inspect the slip yoke and universal joints because they are exposed to dirt and water from the road surface. Vibrations coming from the drive shaft area can be caused by the shaft being out of balance.
