The gearbox’s job:

We know from the engine page that the engine is producing energy to power the car. We know from the driveshaft page that the energy from the engine is applied to the wheels on the road via the driveshaft. In order to keep the engine running as efficiently as possible [for the various speeds you want to go] the turning effort from the engine goes through the gearbox . You can hear this as you change gear – the engine revolutions speed up as you increase energy output by pressing on the accelerator: When you change up a gear you then hear the engine noise decrease as the revolutions decrease. 

Manual Vs Automatic gearboxes:

Manual gearboxes take a little more time to master but offer more control, tend to be cheaper to buy & maintain plus are more efficient. Automatic gearboxes tend to be easier to master and require less effort to control – which is great if you are in the stop/start traffic snarl on the way to work – but are heavier, use more fuel and are more likely to overheat.
